New Update on Deyermond Fields Status
from the Town of Andover
On May 12, 2011, the Town of Andover released a notice that routine testing at the Ledge Road Landfill detected the presence of methane gas in soil below the ground surface in an area in which previous testing had not revealed the presence of methane. The area is located away from the playing fields and just outside of the parking lot beyond the chain link fence. When the notice was released, the town reported that it was awaiting additional air quality testing results. On May 19th, the town received those results, and is pleased to report that they confirm our initial reactions.
The additional air quality sampling program was designed to collect seven ambient air quality samples above ground and throughout the field area over a 24 hour period, thereby, capturing a continuous indication of ambient air quality over the testing period. None of the samples showed any sign of methane. The town’s engineering firm, CDM, stated that there were very low non-reportable detections of several volatile organic compounds in the air samples, all of which are commonly found in the atmosphere as a result of natural and anthropogenic discharges. The low concentrations suggest that the detections are representative of background conditions and are not related to the landfill.
In short, we are finding no landfill gases in the ambient air at the playing fields, which is excellent news. Residents should be confident that their children are safe while using the fields, and that we will continue routine testing of the area.
